Overwatch as a first-person shooter game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, has more than 35 million players worldwide. China as one of the countries that have most players, experiences lots of chaos inside the Overwatch community.
Before the game officially available on 24 May 2016, there was a public beta version of this game that can only be played by few people. In this group of people, Chinese hard-core players formed two esports team, which are later bought by Invictus Gaming.
These two teams, IGice, and IGfire, were considered the best Overwatch esports team in China. IGfire, which was consisted of younger and better professional gamers, gained great attention from ordinary gamers.
However, during the first Overwatch Asia Pacific Tournament, a small team from Vici Gaming defeated IGfire. Then the chaos began.
Team manager of Invictus Gaming Ai Disheng spread the rumour that Lu “Diya” Wei Da, the star player in team VG, is a cheater. Diya was accused of cheating, hacking, and using bots include aimbot to improve his aiming performance.
Invictus Gaming as the authority inside the Chinese gaming community immediately caused more slanders and online abuse against Diya and team VG. Even though Diya and his team promised that it was not true, indignant gamers still cursed Diya’s death for “cheating” in professional matches.
Months later, the recorded in-game perspective of Diya was exposed. And Diya was proved his innocence. Furthermore, the chat history of Ai Disheng from Invictus Gaming was exposed.
In the chat history Ai Disheng said that he knew Diya didn’t cheat, but he planned to manipulate public opinions to discourage team VG. Furious people found that they were being used by Invictus Gaming and started to attack team IGfire.
Diya finally made through all these slanders and abuses; he found a better team in Overwatch League – Shanghai Dragon. While team IGfire was disbanded due to the serious scandal.
